UPDATED! How to Turn a 3M Air Filter into a Face Mask

3M has officially said they don't recommend using these filters in this way.
I was fortunate to find Filti, which was designed for face masks, and I have an updated tutorial available here: https://youtu.be/2J3Fq4o-U4I Please watch this one instead.
I also have a discount code, MPPMask which will get you 10% off your order with Filti.com

In this video Dr. Lili talks updated her previous tutorial with important information after talking to several experts in personal protective equipment and safety. The new updates include noting the direction of the air flow, storing the filters in ziploc bags, and making sure the filters are double layered and not reused. This is just an idea, and the user assumes all risks in making or wearing these masks. She discusses electrostatic forces in the filters, not using heat, and other safety concerns. She also answers the question of fiberglass in the filters.
For those concerned about safety, here is the Safety Data available from 3M: http://www1.mscdirect.com/MSDS/MSDS00023/53337903-20111224.PDF

I'm working on a tutorial that's a bit more complex, but has more contouring to the face (see below) that may be more comfortable, but I believe this is functional. I'm also testing out a new filter material today, and I think and hope it will be superior to the 3M filter, and can't wait to try it out. Please subscribe so you get the updates on my newest video hopefully within the next day or two.

And this is the face shield tutorial - if your healthcare worker is wearing a cloth mask, the face shield is VITAL (doesn't have to be my version, but they need something to block the droplets from hitting the mask). https://youtu.be/UKK0Y7XQN7I

Here's a little more info about PPE if you want it, but I covered a lot of it in the filtrete video: https://youtu.be/g77WJwpjjYs

If you're having trouble finding elastic, I went to Dollar Tree and bought a bunch of headbands (not ponytail holders, but big headbands that go around the whole head). They're about 1/4" thick and can be cut and sewn appropriately. They were 6 for $1 and black. They are very different in stretchiness, so cut one and see how it feels before mass producing.

This tutorial may do nothing to mitigate your risk of COVID-19. It's just an idea. Anyone making or wearing these masks does so at their own risk.
