Resignation of Chris Eccles triggers no confidence motion against Daniel Andrews

The Andrews government is in turmoil following the resignation of the Premier's right-hand man Chris Eccles, after it was revealed he called the chief commissioner of police during a crucial six-minute window when officials were discussing the use of private security.

Two senior figures in the Andrews government have now resigned over Victoria’s hotel quarantine scandal with Mr Eccles following former Health Minister Jenny Mikakos in stepping down from his position after handing over his phone records to the inquiry board.

During the six-minute period, then Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton changed his mind from thinking security at the hotels would be undertaken by police or the AFP to understanding it would be done by private security under what he referred to as a deal set up by the DPC.

Mr Ashton has since denied he spoke to Mr Eccles about private security for hotel quarantine facilities.

The state opposition has moved for a vote of no confidence in Premier Daniel Andrews, however given the Labor majority Victoria’s lower house, the motion is unlikely to pass.
