Mega Build -16,000 sf - Part 21: Cabinets and Storage

In selecting the cabinetry for the various rooms in the Project House, our goal was to create a fashionable and stylish look that was visually appealing, yet functional, with plenty of special storage options. Cabinetry is often called “permanent furniture”, because cabinets serve many of the same uses as furniture—only cabinets are “built-in”. Therefore, it is crucial to pay close attention to your cabinetry selection and layout in the planning stage of building your new house.
QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER WHEN DESIGNING CABINET LAYOUT
Pre-planning, with specific consideration for your family’s lifestyle, is crucial when laying out your cabinet design, especially in the kitchen. Here are a few key questions that can help you decide what kind, and how many cabinets you need:
1. How many people will be cooking in the kitchen?
2. Will you need more than one work area?
3. Do you have a large or small family?
4. Do you entertain on a regular basis?
5. Do you need to build in space for children in the kitchen?
6. Do you purchase food in bulk, or in small amounts?
ARMSTRONG CABINETS IN THE PROJECT HOUSE
Armstrong Cabinets provided the cabinetry throughout the Project House. We worked closely with Rob Glenn of Armstrong cabinets to create beautiful, distinctive and functional cabinet combinations in the kitchen, the hobby room, the eleven bathrooms and all the common rooms in this 16,000 square foot mega-house.
In the kitchen, the square, granite-topped island provided an excellent opportunity to be creative in matching the under-island cabinetry on each side with the functional use of the kitchen on that side of the island. For example, on the side of the island by the stove, we installed cabinets with spice racks, so that the spices would be easily accessible to whoever is cooking. On the side of the island near the built-in desk, we installed open bookcases for a decorative, yet functional complement to the desk area.
We chose cabinetry that would complement the arched, open view from the kitchen to the living room, using peninsula glass wall cabinets structured into the archway. This also allows us to showcase collectibles, making good use of glass shelves and lighting for a dramatic, unforgettable effect.
We added depth and drama to the wall cabinetry around our oven and built-in microwave by using cabinets with alternating depths and heights, and gave the whole a traditional styling by trimming the cabinets out using fluted fillers with wood medallions.
