EASY WAY to do a 3-POINT TURN

[Disclaimer 1: Safety is the #1 priority. You can do more than 3 points if needed and if it's legal and safe. You're never obligated to do a 3-point turn.]

Have you ever attempted a 3-point turn - but it ended up being more like a 5-point turn? Whether you’re new or experienced, here are 3 easy reference points to help you do 3-point turns much smoother than you might be doing now. Ok, let’s go!

* First, turn on your right-turn signal.
* Slow down and pull as close as possible, parallel with the right curb.

POINT 1: CENTER OF DASHBOARD
* Align the right curb with the center of your dashboard. This reference point works for average standard cars.
* Turn on your left-turn signal.
* Check all mirrors and blind spot, to make sure no one is in front, behind, or to your side.
* Pull forward while turning your wheel completely to the LEFT. Your car will start doing a U-turn.

POINT 2: LEFT-SIDE MIRROR
* Stop when your left side mirror aligns close to the left curb.
* Shift to reverse.
* Turn your wheel all the way to the RIGHT, while you scan left and right for approaching cars.
* Roll back.

POINT 3: CENTER OF ROAD
* Stop when your car aligns near the center of the road.
* Shift to drive.
* Turn your wheel all the way LEFT, while you scan left and right for approaching traffic.
* Pull forward into the lane.

Good job – you did it! Now you’re on your merry way.

Disclaimer 2: Unless prohibited by law, 3-point turns are legal to do in safe situations. Remember, it’s generally safe do a 3-point turn only on flat, smaller roads where there is no center line or where the center line is dotted. But never attempt a 3-point turn in the following situations:

• On a main road
• Near an intersection
• Near a sharp curve
• At the top of a hill
• On roads with a solid center line
• Each state has its own laws (in some cases, certain cities too). Check your local law to see if or where it may be prohibited.
