AVOID JACK RABBIT STARTS and rapid
accelerations. When you put the pedal to
the metal, your car outputs more
horsepower. And that can increase fuel
consumption up to 40%! You’re only
reducing your travel time by a mere 4%, so
it’s really not worth it. In city driving, almost
50% of the energy needed to power your
car goes into acceleration. The most fuel
efficient way is to accelerate slowly and
smoothly, and to maintain your speed. That
consumes relatively less power and
therefore less gas.
• Also AVOID HARD BRAKING and sudden
stops. It’s better to anticipate traffic flow
and coast to decelerate as much as
possible. Most modern cars these days
have fuel-injection. This means when you
remove your foot from the accelerator, the
flow of fuel to the engine stops until the
engine speed drops to idle, at which point
the fuel starts again so that your car
doesn’t stall. These 2 tips alone can
improve your fuel economy up to 35%.
