The Fall of Tesla

Once the darling of the tech industry, Tesla has fallen from grace. 2022 was a tough year for many tech companies, but few fared worse than Tesla. The stock is down 69%, and despite his immature humor around share prices, I’m sure Elon isn’t laughing this time.

The SCRIPT:
Compared to other carmakers, Tesla’s the biggest loser there too. Despite heavy losses across the industry, other leaders like Ford and General Motors only posted losses in the 40% range in 2022.

So what gives? What happened during 2022 that caused such a fall from a company that was once seen as untouchable?
Now, it doesn’t take a brain surgeon to see the link between Elon Musk, the actions he’s taken over the past year to acquire a social media company?, and the resulting share price of Tesla.

But the details are interesting, and I really love ragging on Elon Musk. After all, the guy has been playing God with the stock and crypto markets for years now.

So let’s take a moment to talk about Tesla, and why the company is in dire straits.

First off, it’s important to remember that while Tesla has taken an absolute beating this year, it’s worth arguing that the stock was completely overvalued to begin with. In 2020, the stock price rose 800% in value and in 2021, it rose an additional 50%. This brought Tesla’s price to earnings ratio to 190, which is extremely high. For the uninitiated, a price to earnings ratio really just compares the price of the stock with the earnings of the company, and a lower price to earnings ratio is generally desired. A P/E ratio of 20-25 is the average, with ratios lower than that being considered value plays. Obviously, with a ratio of 190, Tesla seemed overhyped at the end of 2021.

So, why exactly was Tesla as hyped as it was? Vox reports that this is a classic example of a disruption fetish. If you look at companies that have gone public in the last couple decades, you’ll find that most of the stratospherically successful ones were considered “disruptors” - meaning they took an existing industry and turned it on its head. They went after the old guard and beat them.
