Demise of the Dark Web

The dark web has long been a safe haven for criminals looking to buy and sell illegal goods, but recently law enforcement has struck back by bringing down the three largest darknet marketplaces. What's next for these cyber criminals?

The SCRIPT:
For years, online criminals have been using the dark web to buy and sell illegal goods. Illicit substances, weapons, hitmen and more - all have been sold from within online, encrypted communities. Only in-the-know individuals know how to access these sites, because they don’t exist on the same internet that you and I use every day. These sites can only be accessed using a specific browser, called Tor, and their web addresses are random strings of letters and numbers, called an onion address.

The most well known dark web community was the Silk Road. It was shut in 2013 by law enforcement, but new sites were quick to replace it. Online users call this “Whack-a-mole” - you know that funny arcade game where you try to hit a little mole that pops out of a hole? Well the darkweb market’s are the mole, and law enforcement, that’s the player.

No matter how many sites law enforcement agencies bring down, there will always be more that replace them.
The Replacements
When the Silk Road was taken down, three sites popped up to fill the void. The first was called Dream Market. This site was quickly followed by another called AlphaBay. And the last was called Hansa. AlphaBay became the de facto leader of the pack, garnering over 400,000 users by 2017. It’s believed that it was nearly 20 times the size of the Silk Road, by total number of transactions.

Dream market was next on the totem pole, and Hansa third. Each site offered its users the same basic premise: browse for your illegal goods using our easy to use interface, talk with our vendors over encrypted chat, purchase your goods using the relatively untraceable Bitcoin, and receive your illegal goods in the mail (often using the US postal service).

For years, this strategy worked perfectly for admins, vendors and users alike. Of course, law enforcement knew about these services almost as soon as they came online, but the encryption of the Tor browser made finding the criminals more challenging than if they were using the clearnet, the internet we all know and love.

But the thing about criminals is… they’re just people too. They make mistakes. They get high on their own success. And law enforcement is hyper vigilant. All it takes is one small mishap and the entire house of cards will fall…
