How political parties started in Uganda
The Democratic Party (DP) was formed in 1954. Before its formation, the politics of Uganda was predominantly influenced by the Buganda tribe which is the largest in the country.
The Buganda are ruled by a king known as the Kabaka. While the Kabaka wanted the traditional institutions to continue to wield political power and influence, the Democratic Party along with most other people in Uganda besides the Buganda people, wanted a more modern unitary state without traditional institutions.
