Banana Pudding with Michael's Home Cooking

There is nothing like homemade Banana Pudding. I really hope you all try this classic old fashioned American Recipe. It is not hard to make and this will make your family smile!
Ingredients:
Custard:
3/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup cornstarch
4 egg yolks
4 cups milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon table salt (1/2 t coarse salt)
2 Tablespoons cold butter (or a bit more)

Meringue:
4 egg whites
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/2 cup sugar

Also needed:
3 bananas
1 package Pepperidge Farm Chessmen Cookies
If you like buy two packages of cookies because some of them will probably be broken and they are good served on the side as well.

Make your custard first by taking 3/4 cup sugar, 1/3 cup cornstarch and mix. Then add your egg yolks and milk.
Put on stove top and turn heat on when it is all mixed well and turn on medium heat. Stir till it starts to bubble, then cook and stir for two minutes. Turn off the heat and add your vanilla, salt and butter.
Set aside.

Set your oven to 350F
Bring some water to boil, place a metal bowl over the water.
Add your 4 egg whites, cream of tartar and 1/2 cup sugar.
Cook and stir around 1 minute or so till hot and sugar is melted.
Take bowl off heat and beat on high with mixer for 2 and 1/2 to 3 minutes to make the meringue.
Set aside.

Get your 13 X 9 pan out and assemble the banana pudding with cookies, then banana slices.
Next your custard.
Next the meringue.
Bake for 12/13 minutes @ 350 to brown the meringue.

Allow to cool a couple hours, refrigerate leftover.
This is great cold or room temperature.
