Coronavirus outbreak: Ontario's outbreak-free long-term care homes to allow for family visits | FULL

Ontario Premier Doug Ford provided an update on the ongoing COVID-19 response in the province on Thursday, alongside Health Minister Christine Elliott, Minister of Long-Term Care Merrilee Fullerton and Minister of Children, Community and Social Services Todd Smith.

During the press conference, Ford announced that long-term care homes and retirement residences in the province not experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks will allow for the "cautious restart" of family visitors starting June 18.

Fullerton elaborated on the guidelines of a phased visitation plan for long-term care and retirement home residents after Ford's provincial announcement. According to Fullerton, for long-term care homes, this includes one visit per resident at a minimum of once a week for an outdoor visit only.

“Thanks to the hard work of our frontline workers and the collective efforts of everyone in stopping the spread, we can now allow families to reunite with their loved ones safely and in person with strict public health measures to protect residents, visitors and staff,” said the premier.

The move comes after Ford tested negative for the novel coronavirus. His office said Wednesday he would get tested after learning that Education Minister Stephen Lecce had come into contact with someone who was infected.
