Coronavirus outbreak: Ontario moves into "Stage 1" of reopening | FULL

Ontario Premier Doug Ford was joined by Health Minister and Deputy Premier Christine Elliott, Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli, Finance Minister Rod Phillips and Labour Minister Monte McNaughton on Thursday to provide an update on the fight against COVID-19.

Ford announced that the province would begin to reopen as part of "Stage 1" of the overall reopening plan. As of Saturday, parks, marinas, golf courses and businesses that board animals will be allowed to open. On May 19, he said retail stores with street entrances that are not located in shopping malls with strict social distancing and some other services will also be able to resume. He added that businesses should only open "if they are ready."

The premier said that they were relying on direction from health officials and the case numbers in determining when they can move to the next stage of reopening, following the beginning of Stage 1. Asked about personal services, like hair care, Ford said people would still have to wait for the time being.

Asked about when people would be able to see their families, Elliott said that despite the announcement of Stage 1 reopening, there was no final answer "yet." But said they have been discussing options like "bubbling" as seen in other jurisdictions, like New Brunswick's "housing bubbles".

The health minister also said that in the past several weeks testing had been done on the judgment of the clinician, but as of Thursday any Ontarian with symptoms of COVID-19 can be tested. She said with the reopening of the economy, this is needed to do more public surveillance testing to know what impact the reopening may have on cases.
