Quick Facts:
• Debut solo album, released in December 1970, after Lennon had issued 3 experimental albums with Yoko Ono and Live Peace in Toronto 1969, a live performance in Toronto credited to the Plastic Ono Band.
• Phil Spector had been asked to co-produce but Lennon and Ono produced the album largely on their own, as Spector was unavailable during most of the recording sessions
• In early 1971, the album reached #8 in UK and #6 in US.
• Ranked # 23 in the Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

1. Mother – Starts with a funeral bell tolling slowly, 4 times. Ends with him initially singing the phrase "Mama don't go, daddy come home", but then screaming as the song fades out.

2. Hold On – Sparse arrangement took 32 takes experimenting with different approaches before hitting on this one. Described as "the most upbeat song on album, the song's theme is emotional fragility, as lyrics state that when you're alone in the world you just have to "hold on."

3. I Found Out – Expresses his disillusionment with a world dominated by what he saw as false religion and idols, and warns against being taken in by such beliefs.

4. Working Class Hero – Political, is commentary/criticism on the difference between social classes. Tells story of someone growing up in the working class. He said it is about working class individuals being processed into the middle classes, into the "machine".

5. Isolation – Lennon felt disillusioned with fame and where his life was heading, with break-up of the Beatles, attacks he and Yoko were facing at the time, as well as acute insecurity and self-doubt brought on through his extensive drug use. It reveals his feelings of vulnerability, despite his fame and fortune.

6. Remember - Influenced by primal therapy sessions as lyrics reflect things typically remembered in therapy.

7. Love – Theme is more upbeat than most of the songs on album, Spector playing piano, Wanted to release as single but did Mother instead.

8. Well, Well, Well – Longest track on album, features a blistering guitar part, screaming vocals and a brutal, pounding backing track. Lyrics describe mundane incidents from Lennon's daily life with Yoko Ono.

9. Look At Me – Features double-tracked vocals, Began writing in India in 1968, during the extended sessions for the White Album.

10. God – Was considered controversial upon release, dealing with anti-religious themes. Describes his change since the break-up of the Beatles. While the Beatles were basically his family throughout the 1960s, he states that he is no longer the "Dreamweaver" or "The Walrus", but just "John".

11. My Mummy’s Dead – 49 seconds, Only John on acoustic, wrote concerning his mother, partially set to the tune of nursery rhyme "Three Blind Mice."
