Ryan Humiston STRAWMANS Progressive Overload

#EnkiriEliteFitness #RyanHumiston #ProgressiveOverload
Ryan Humiston released a video a couple months ago where he asserted that progressive overload "never worked that well" for him and explains that that is why he trains using the unique style that he currently espouses. Unfortunately, however, Ryan's argument in the video does not hold up to scrutiny. For one thing, he consistently conflates the concept of training intensity, i.e. how much weight is on the bar relative to one's capabilities, with progressive overload. Arguing that light weights are a better way to induce hypertrophy than just "stacking weight onto the bar," which is his way of disingenuously describing progressive overload.

However, this is a strawman argument because one can induce overload with both heavy weights OR with light weights, as well as with any permutation in between. These are separate concepts altogether, and the load on the bar that day does not dictate whether or not overload is achieved over the course of a mesocycle. That is accomplished through other means, such as adding reps, adding volume, increasing intensity, increasing density, gradually increasing the weight, rotating movements, or some combination of multiple of these things. Yet, throughout his video Ryan insists that training with heavy compound exercises and just "stacking weight onto the bar" - common sense out the window - is the essence of progressive overload, whereas his method of training with light weights and gimmicky exercises, which he claims is absent the concept of progressive overload, is somehow able to induce superior hypertrophy.

This makes no sense and is physiologically impossible without the use of PED's. So the only choices left are that:
A. Ryan's program works for non-PED users and therefore must utilize progressive overload in spite of his weird distaste for it. OR
B. Ryan's program only works if you are taking PED's because it fails to account for basic, universally applied, necessary weight training concepts such as progressive overload.

After finishing editing this video I am inclined to lean heavier towards option B because while editing I found footage from Ryan's old channel, circa 2012, where he posted a decent bit of training footage of him performing heavy compound exercises, like deadlifts, leg presses, chin-ups, and barbell rows. He trained like a normal gym rat/bodybuilder back then and was just as muscular back then, if not more so then he is now. The primary difference in his physique from then to now is that he is leaner these days, but that is a function of diet more so than training style. This would indicate that his current training style allows him to maintain the mass that he already built years ago using heavy compound exercises, but it does not help him to build new muscle. Thus, if you are a beginner or a natural lifter it would stand to reason that these techniques are going to be highly suboptimal for you in general.
