Woodturning a Pedestal Bowl for my Sister.
December 5 is a special day in Netherlands; a day on which we all receive gifts from Sinterklaas. (Santa's cousin.) Of course this is mostly for families with small children but essentially anyone can give you something as a gift. In this case my sister dropped by, completely unexpected, and gave us some candy and a home-made Brownie Cake, very tasty!
I then told her this was to be reciprocated on Christmas Eve and of course it has to be something out of wood. (I don't bake, I just turn wood.😎) So then the question was what to make but fortunately a fellow YouTuber (Lisa Ramlow) had just posted the perfect idea. She made a Walnut Pedestal Bowl and I happened to have just the right wood for that! This wood comes from my own garden where I took a tree down last year.
So that's what it has become, 33cm wide and 14cm high.
In the beginning of the video I'm showing a sketch of how it was supposed to look but while turning I decided that a bowl this size needed a bigger pedestal so I ended up leaving it a lot wider than on the drawing. This design change also allowed me to finish the base in one stage. If I had made the pedestal much thinner I would have had to come back to take off the last part or risk it breaking off during hollowing. And I already had vibration issues during the hollowing, with a thinner pedestal these would have been far worse.
