Woodturning floating triangles with bowties - extreme open segmented bowl
Woodturning floating triangles with bowties resulting in an open segmented bowl. This video looks at how to turn open segmented bowls using scrap wood and yet look woodturned from a single piece of wood.
Okay, so the title is provocative and there are restrictions and caveats, but the point here is that you do not need a large lump of wood or a bowl blank to make a bowl look as though it has been woodturned from a single piece. Herein I use scraps from a customer project to turn an open bowl concept using bow ties as interconnecting pieces.
It should be possible to follow this method with scraps of wood or small pieces of exotic wood that are not normally found as large blocks. Plus it gives you control over the geometry of the pieces, where you no longer have to use quadrilateral wedges, but can have more exotic shapes.
A lot of attention is required to ensure the grain runs in the same direction and matches as closely as possible, which I didn't do with this project. I went through 10+ attempts in trying to figure out the cutting angles for the initial triangle pieces and was simply happy to turn this piece without it disintegrating on the lathe.
