Custom Laser Cut "Jeep" Key Fob

To explain a few things the video doesn't really cover, I started off by scanning the internals with an ordinary printer/scanner. Once I had the scan saved as a JPEG I then imported the image into CorelDraw so I could trace everything from the image. To get my traces as accurate as possible I cross measured a few things with calipers to know if I needed to adjust a few nodes here and there till it was as perfect as possible. With the image now vector traced I then tested this further by cutting a few paper templates from 65pnd card stock blanks and matched them up to the actual parts. Once I was satisfied with the results I selected a piece of "crotch/figured walnut" from my materials bin and started the process of raster etching away the various inner depths needed to accommodate the various internal layout of the electronics. This was done via making multiple passes at varied speeds and power until the parts dropped in flush.

To get the counter sink reliefs needed for the three 4.5mm nuts and 4mm screw heads, as well as the Jeep logo on front side face, I simply flipped the cutout halves over in their original holes and ran the parts of the file I needed for the reverse sides and viola!

After a test assembly to be sure I had proper clearances, I removed all the internals and put the case halves back together. I then used a dremmel tool with a sanding drum to shape and contour the button reliefs and edges to my liking, I hand sanded everything with 220 down to 1500 grit sandpaper and tossed on a quick coat of teak oil to make things pop!
Hope this inspires some of to see more potential uses for your laser machines other than working with simple 2D structures.
