The male reproductive system
The male reproductive system consists out of the penis, scrotum, testicles, epididymis, the prostate gland and several accessory structures like the vas deferens and seminal vesicles. Together this system has multiple important functions, it produces, maintains and transports sperm and semen, it produces male sex hormones and it plays a role in urination.

Vasectomy
This is a surgical procedure, where the vas deferens is cut or sealed. After this procedure this man would still be able to ejaculate, but his semen would not have any sperm it in. This makes a vasectomy a permanent contraceptive.
There are 2 types of vasectomy:
- A conventional vasectomy using a scalpel (surgical knife)
- A no-scalpel vasectomy

Pro's:
- A vasectomy is more than 99% effective as contraception.
I- t is basically permanent, so once it's done you don't have to think about contraception again.
- It doesn't affect your hormone balances, sex drive or ability to enjoy sex.
- And lastly long-term effects on your health are rare.

Con's:
- First of all, it is basically permanent. It can surgically be tried to reattach the vas deferens after a vasectomy, but this is rarely effective.
- This is sometimes a reason for your doctor to refuse to carry out this procedure. This is especially true for men under 30 years of age or men without children.
- This also means that when going for a vasectomy you need to be absolutely certain your don’t want any more children or don’t want them at all.
- Furthermore, the procedure itself can cause symptoms like bruises, edema and pain. As with any type of surgery there also a chance on complications; an infection, long-term testicle pain, a collection of blood inside your scrotum or hard lumps in your scrotum called sperm granulomas.
- Lastly, a vasectomy doesn't protect you against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). So you may need to use condoms as well. Always keep that in mind.
