Celeste: Chapter 1 - Forsaken City (All Red Strawberries, C. Tape, Blue Heart)

So after the Prologue shows off Madeline, her controls, and one other character she'll encounter through the game (Granny), you get to play through the game for real, now.

Every level is explained as a Chapter of Madeline's quest. She will enter into different locations throughout Celeste Mountain in order to climb her way through them and up the mountain.

Her basic controls involve jumping and climbing. However, she has weak stamina, and will very soon start helplessly sliding down walls if you just simply make her climb up them or even jump up through them. Try to save her stamina by wall jumping when possible.

Madeline's special technique is to dash. She can do this on the ground and in the air. She can only dash once before touching the ground, and this is shown by changing her hair from red to blue for that moment. You will find green Dash Crystals that will refill her dash before she lands, and these will often be chained to pretty much let her fly through rooms.

Also, there are some advanced techniques I can pull off with this. You'll be seeing this in my playthrough from time to time.

Everything that can hurt Madeline will just kill her in one hit. You'll have to start a room over when this happens, but don't be too discouraged. Failure in this game just means you didn't do something correctly. You have to figure out what that is!
----------

The main objects of Chapter 1 are Traffic Blocks. If you stand or cling to them, they suddenly move fast until they reach the end of their line, and then slowly return to their original position. These blocks can and will be used to shove Madeline right into deadly spikes, but you can also try to use their momentum to launch her far away, sometimes in succession.

Other unique hazards can include falling ice blocks.
----------

One of the main collectibles of this game are Strawberries. You can't just collect them to add them to your count. You have to grab them and then bring them out of harms way before you can actually win them. Some will have wings, and will fly away if you dash. Rooms they will be in will often make you figure out how to reach Winged Strawberries without dashing.

You are not required to get Strawberries to beat this game, but getting enough of them will make the main ending more fulfilling.

On Chapter reruns, you can pause the game and see at the bottom how many Strawberries you got in each Chapter's area. A Strawberry you already got in Chapter reruns will be blue, instead. Any dash lines you see are of Red Strawberries you haven't collected, yet.

I don't get all Strawberries in one go, but I always go back to get the rest if I missed any before moving on to a different stage.
----------

Another collectible in this game are Crystal Hearts. In the regular Chapters, these will be blue. Some of them are hidden away, while others require you to do a special task.

Chapter 1's Blue Heart has you follow a color pattern, based on what colors flash on a satellite's monitor. You have to match your dash directions to the colors of the birds nearby based on which ways each of them dash.

In this case, it's Up, Left, Down-Right, Up-Right, Left, Up-Left. Do this right, and the Blue Heart is yours.
----------

One more collectible I can show are Cassette Tapes. These are also in hidden rooms, but the rooms themselves will always use blue and pink patterns that blink on and off to the beat of a chiptune song.

If you can get a Cassette Tape, you can access a Chapter's B-Side, which is an obstacle course remix of the Chapter that's much harder than the A-Side of it.

Whether you're looking for Hearts and Tapes or not, keep your eyes peeled in every room. Some rooms will be hidden behind breakable blocks, while others will be stuffed away tight holes that you could miss. Some hidden spots may not be reveal until you can reach up to them.
----------

As far as story goes, Madeline meets another climber in the Crossing area of Chapter 1: A guy from Seattle named Theo, who has hair that looks as fluffy as his beard. You get to talk to him a few times, though I should've done more of that, here.

He has his own reasons for climbing the mountain, but it feels like he's in a better place in his head compared to Madeline.
----------

Chapter 1 ends next to a campfire and a massive grave that states: "This memorial dedicated to those who perished on the climb". After all, mountain climbing is indeed a dangerous sport that has claimed many careless lives.

Madeline sets up her campfire, and decides to take a rest. After her efforts of getting up to this point of the mountain, begun to regret her journey...
