10 Greatest Prom Styles Of The 90's

1. Chokers
Chances are good you wore a choker to prom. Even better, your dress (or gown rather) was black and flowy and had a choker collar. Made out of all types of material, from velvet to tribal beads to disco-ball shimmery sequins, most girls had at least one.

2. Shiny Dresses
Dresses that could put any mermaid to shame - the sequins, the draping, the fringe at the bottom - are now a curiosity rather than a thing of eternal, classic beauty. A combination of vaudeville meets Donna Summer, many girls sported these dresses and looked quite trendy and stylish at the time.

3. Clear Light-up Heels
Sort of a precursor to today's "stripper" heels, the clear light up heels started in the 90s and were commonly seen at prom. Some of the clear wedges gave the appearance of walking on air and having longer legs. Others had designs painted on the Lucite. Some had items embedded in the clear plastic, such as plastic flowers.

4. Tiny Beaded Purses
these purses, which could hold nothing but your prom ticket and lipstick, were on every girl's shoulder. Nothing says classy and fancy like tiny plastic beads.
5. Halter Tops
Halter tops that came down to mid-tummy, paired with a long iridescent skirt, were seen at prom over and over again. Some of the tops were of a simple material, others were ruffly, and some were made entirely of sequins. Halter tops that were able to combine the era's fascination with neon colors and Chinese insignia were definite showstoppers.
6. Tiaras
Typically of the five dollar variety, the tiaras were worn on top of an updo. They went with dresses with simple shapes and square or high necklines. Curls were piled high on the head with lots of pins and that tiara. The nobility of prom night borrowed this royal look from weddings and the Brits.
7. Matching Shoes
If your style was the one-armed ruffled bandit, chances were you also had your shoes dyed to match and wore sheer black nylons. All-in-all, a very wholesome look and the length of the dress looked a bit grandmotherly compared to styles of the 21st century, which trend to the micro-mini variety.
8. Urkel
Some of the stars that may have influenced what was worn to prom included the fashion don'ts, such as Urkel. Just be sure not to show up wearing zubaz pants and a backwards baseball cap.

9. Guy's Fashion
For prom, typically a tuxedo is a tuxedo, but there are many ways of bringing in the style of the era. In the '90s it was bright, geometric patterns, which might be found on the fly guy's tie, or some bright Ray Ban sunglasses, which seem to have re-emerged. Forget the formal shoes and wear a pair of brightly colored Nikes.

10. Group Photos
Don't forget the corsage and the group photo. The backdrops could be timeless (and hence meaningless), or worse, extremely trendy to the point of embarrassment. Don't pose with your date by a garden prop like the Virgin Mary; that's just awkward. And don't pose with Barney as tribute to your childhood.
