Actors Who Turned Down Career Making TV Roles

Jennifer Love Hewitt
Hewitt was offered the role of Robin Scherbatsky in the CBS sitcom "How I Met Your Mother" but instead chose to do the less popular "The Ghost Whisperer," also on CBS. Most HIMYM viewers are relieved that the role went instead to Cobie Smulders, an unknown actress at the time.

Dominic West
West reportedly turned down a role on the hit HBO drama "Game of Thrones" because he had never heard of it. He went on to play Hector in the well-regarded BBC America drama, "The Hour," and won a BAFTA for his work in the TV movie "Appropriate Adult."

Scott Foley
The star of hit TV show, "Scandal" reportedly auditioned for the role of lead character Ted on "How I Met Your Mother" but turned it down when the role was offered to him. Before auditioning, he had many notable roles in hit shows such as "Felicity," "True Blood," and "Grey's Anatomy," but portraying Ted would've been a breakthrough.

Rob Lowe
In 2004, Rob Lowe was offered two TV roles, both in medical dramas. When he was asked to play the part of Dr. Derek Shepherd on "Grey's Anatomy," he turned it down to instead play another TV doctor. His role as Dr. Billy Grant on "Dr. Vegas" was short-lived as the show was cancelled after a mere five episodes.

Katee Sackhoff
Sackhoff claimed she was looking for more job security when she turned down the role of Alcide's psycho ex, Debbie Pelt, on the HBO vampire drama "True Blood." She declined the single season role in favor of taking a role on a potential TV drama on ABC, "Boston's Finest."

Thomas Jane
Originally, "Mad Men's" Don Draper was not to be played by Jon Hamm. In fact, he was at the bottom of the casting list. It was actually "Hung's" Thomas Jane that was slated for the role. He, along with a few others, turned it down for different roles.

Gillian Anderson
The former star of the "X-Files" was offered the role of Lady Cora Crawley on the Emmy-winning PBS drama, "Downton Abbey." She felt that she was too young to play the matriarch and turned down the role. She went on to have roles in PBS' "Masterpiece Classic" update of "Great Expectations," but playing Lady Crawley could've made her name big in TV again.

Matthew Broderick
Before "Breaking Bad" became an overnight hit, Matthew Broderick was given a script and told that if he liked the part, he could have it. He turned down the role of Walter White and went on to perform in "Election" as a drug-dealing chemistry teacher who goes crazy, and the role of Walter White went to Bryan Cranston.

Sarah Jessica Parker
Sarah Jessica Parker was not the first choice to play the role of Carrie in HBO's "Sex and the City." Dana Delany turned down the role because she just didn't think she was stylish enough. She went on to play Katherine Mayfair in the hit soap opera "Desperate Housewives."
