Salvaging USS Guardian: Cutting a Warship Off Tubbataha Reef

USS Guardian became the center of one of the most delicate ship salvage operations ever attempted on a protected reef. After grounding on Tubbataha Reef in January 2013, the wooden and glass-reinforced plastic minehunter could not be refloated or dragged away without turning its hull into a destructive plow across living coral.

This documentary follows the engineering crisis behind the USS Guardian recovery. Salvage teams first faced a collapsing structure, monsoon-driven waves, and approximately 15,000 gallons of diesel fuel trapped inside damaged bunker tanks. Before any cutting plan or heavy lift could begin, crews carried out controlled defueling to prevent a chemical disaster inside the marine sanctuary.

Once the pollution threat was reduced, the USS Guardian was no longer treated as a ship to save. It became a wreck to dismantle. Crews used chainsaws, reciprocating saws, hydraulic tools, and carefully sequenced cuts to divide the hull into four massive sections. Each block required precise rigging before the heavy construction vessel Jascon 25 could lift it clear using dynamic positioning instead of reef-damaging anchors.

The USS Guardian operation was not a clean victory. The grounding damaged thousands of square meters of coral. But the recovery prevented the wreck from spreading even greater destruction across Tubbataha Reef.
