Recovering CSS Neuse: Raised From Mud After 100 Years
CSS Neuse was raised from mud after nearly 100 years, but this was never a simple lift. This documentary follows the real recovery of CSS Neuse, the Confederate ironclad that was deliberately scuttled in 1865 and then trapped in the Neuse River by compacted silt, sand, and time. Long after the war ended, salvors had already stripped away armor, machinery, and guns, leaving only the fragile lower hull buried deep in an anoxic riverbed.
What made CSS Neuse so difficult to recover was not only weight, but geometry. The flat-bottomed hull sat locked against the riverbed with massive breakout resistance, making a direct heavy lift too dangerous for the surviving structure. Recovery crews had to excavate around CSS Neuse, build a cofferdam, dewater the site, and expose the waterlogged timber footprint before any movement was possible. Even then, the wreck survey quickly became a precision ship salvage problem.
Using mechanical jacks, cribbing, and 45-foot log rollers, engineers created an artificial support platform beneath CSS Neuse to prevent bending failure. When overland transport threatened to destroy the hull, they made the brutal but necessary decision to cut the wreck into three sections. That sacrifice preserved CSS Neuse, recovered thousands of artifacts, and turned a buried wreck into one of the most important Civil War ship preservation stories in maritime history.
