Investigating U-166: A Navy Mistake Buried for 60 Years

U-166 was never just another lost U-boat. U-166 became the center of a Navy mistake that buried the truth for sixty years after the submarine’s final attack in the Gulf of Mexico. In July nineteen forty two, U-166 torpedoed the passenger steamer SS Robert E. Lee. Moments later, the U.S. Navy submarine chaser PC-566 launched a rapid depth charge attack and reported heavy oil and shattered debris on the surface. That frontline evidence should have settled the case, but naval authorities dismissed the report and credited a later aircraft attack more than one hundred miles away.

The story changed when deep sea survey technology finally reached the wreck. AUV sonar mapping, high frequency side scan sonar, and later ROV documentation located U-166 near Robert E. Lee, exactly where the original surface action made sense. Investigators recorded an upright main hull, a preserved conning tower, visible deck weapons, and a detached bow section lying hundreds of feet away with severe explosive deformation. That wreck evidence strongly supported the conclusion that PC-566 had delivered the fatal attack.

Because U-166 is a protected war grave, investigators could not enter the hull, dredge sediment, or recover artifacts. The entire wreck investigation depended on non-disturbance forensic analysis, structural failure clues, and visual evidence from outside the submarine.
