Surveying Äpplet: How Vasa’s Lost Sister Was Identified
Äpplet is the missing sister ship of Vasa, and this documentary follows the wreck survey that finally gave the ghost in Swedish archives a hull, a date, and a location. In the crowded Vaxholm Strait, marine archaeologists used side-scan sonar, diver verification, hull measurements, and dendrochronology to separate Äpplet from later blockships and prove they had found the corrected 1629 warship built after the Vasa disaster. The key evidence was technical, not theatrical: a massive double-decked hull, a beam of about 41 feet, and oak samples traced to the Mälardalen timber supply with felling dates in 1627. Those details show why Äpplet matters. Unlike Vasa, Äpplet was widened to improve stability, making the wreck a rare control sample for early naval architecture and ship design history.
This video also explains the engineering constraints behind the discovery: low visibility, heavy traffic, debris-choked seabed, and the challenge of reading wreck evidence underwater without disturbing the site. It follows Äpplet from royal shipyard correction to aging fleet workhorse, and finally to its deliberate sinking as a blockship defending Stockholm in 1659. Today, Äpplet is not a salvage target. It is documented through marine archaeology, photogrammetry, and in-place preservation so its historical context survives on the seabed.
