Panthers D Specialty is Confusing QBs – Kurt Warner Game Tape Breakdown

Earlier in the week, we hit on the Carolina Panthers offense…today, it’s all about the defense. Taking a look at the young talent. Remember a couple of years ago, they went entirely defense in the draft…so, they’ve got a lot of playmakers on that side of the ball. I’m not going to look at those individuals here…but more at the scheme. Because if you look at them last year, they run a pretty unorthodox scheme. I remember talking to Aaron Rodgers and he said, “that’s a lot of college-esque stuff.” They try to change what they do on every single snap to confuse you a little bit. It really starts with the three safety zones they love to run. They have a lot of flexibility back there. Jeremy Chinn is a guy that can do a lot of different things for them. So, they use him in the safety role, the nickel role, a linebacker role, etc. That allows them to put three safeties on the field and do a lot of different things with them.
Led by the flexibility of those three safeties, they are always changing it up, giving you a college-esque look. Everything looks the same. 5-deep: nobody does it but we are seeing it. Seeing them roll to one side and then dropping two or three guys to the other side. It’s all about confusing the quarterback and making him hold the ball a little bit longer, and bringing pressure from a lot of different angles. They play with great energy. They fly to the football. As they get better in this system, I think this defense has a chance to be really good. Coupled with the great weapons they have on offense, this team has a good chance to surprise a lot of people.
