National Anthem of Turkey: İstiklal Marşı

"İstiklâl Marşı" ('Independence March') is the national anthem of both Turkey and Northern Cyprus. It was officially adopted by Grand National Assembly on 12 March 1921 —two-and-a-half years before the 29 October 1923 establishment of the nation— both as a motivational musical saga for the troops fighting in the Turkish War of Independence, and as an aspirational anthem for a Republic that was yet to be established.

It is regularly heard during state and military events, as well as during national festivals, bayrams, sporting events, and school ceremonies. Visual depictions can also be found adorning state or public displays, such as in the form of a scroll displaying the first two quatrains of the anthem on the reverse of the Turkish 100 lira banknotes of 1983–1989.

FRANÇAIS : L’İstiklâl Marşı (Hymne de l’Indépendance) est l’hymne national de la République de Turquie. Elle fut rédigée par Mehmet Âkif Ersoy et adoptée officiellement le 12 mars 1921.

Pendant la guerre d'indépendance turque, la Grande Assemblée nationale de Turquie organisa un concours pour désigner un hymne patriotique dans le but de relever le moral de la population. 724 poèmes furent présentés pour le concours. L'œuvre du compositeur Ali Rıfat Çağatay fut utilisée pour l'hymne jusqu'en 1930. À cette date la composition de Osman Zeki Üngör fut adoptée. Seules les deux premières strophes sont chantées.

İstiklâl Marşı est aussi l'hymne national de la République turque de Chypre du Nord depuis 1983.

Güftesi, Anadolu'da Millî Mücadele'nin devam ettiği sırada Mehmet Âkif Ersoy tarafından kaleme alınmış şiirdir. Şairin Kurtuluş Savaşı'nın kazanılacağına olan inancını, Türk askerinin yürekliliğine ve özverisine güvenini, Türk ulusunun bağımsızlığa, Hakk'a, yurduna ve dinine bağlılığını dile getirir.

Şiir, 12 Mart 1921'de Birinci Türkiye Büyük Millet Meclisi tarafından İstiklâl Marşı olarak kabul edilmiştir. Bestesi Osman Zeki Üngör'e aittir. Orkestrasyonu Edgar Manas tarafından yapılmıştır.
