How do you know if someone is from Northern or Southern Italy?
The trick? Listen out for how they pronounce the word PERCHÉ (meaning “why” or “because”)

That’s it?

Yes! You see, it all in how they use their mouth!

Listen to these 2 words: perchè and perché

Northern Italians will always pronounce the last É with their mouth wide open as if it was an È, such as in words like “è” (=is) or “caffè”. They’d say: Perchè.

Southern Italians will say the last É with their mouth relaxed, as it should be in Standard Italian.

So, we have perchè (Northern Italian - Open) and perché (Standard Italian - Closed)
