How To Migrate Windows Server VM from Hyper V to Proxmox VE

In this guide you will learn how to migrate your Windows Server VMs from Hyper-V to Proxmox VE.
For this migration you'll need to turn off your VMs.

In my case I will be migrating a server 2025 vm but this will work with 2016, 2019 and 2022 as well.

It’s actually pretty straight forward but there are multiple guides out there so I thought I would try doing it step by step.
We are going to assume that the Virtual machine on Hyper-v is functioning correctly as-is.

Prepare the Hyper-v VM with Virtio Drivers:
This step is crucial otherwise when the disk is on Proxmox then it will not load due to the drivers for the scsi or ide controller not being there.
You will get blue screens on the VM Console and maybe even a no bootable device found error.

Once you have the ISO-file, move it to your Hyper-V Server and attach it to your VM.
Within the VM, we run/install following as Administrator:
virtio-win-gt-x64.msi
virtio-win-guest-tools.exe

Hyper-V and Proxmox VE are both popular virtualization platforms, but they utilize different virtual machine formats. Hyper-V uses VHD or VHDX formats, whereas Proxmox VE uses QEMU and typically employs QCOW2 or raw formats. Therefore, to migrate Hyper-V virtual machines to Proxmox VE, certain conversion steps need to be taken.

Commad to convert VHDX to QCOW2:
.\qemu-img.exe convert "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Virtual Hard Disks\WinServer.vhdx" -O qcow2 "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Virtual Hard Disks\WinServer.qcow2"
