How to migrate Hyper-v vhdx VM to Proxmox qcow2

Hyper-V and Proxmox VE are both popular virtualization platforms, but they utilize different virtual machine formats. Hyper-V uses VHD or VHDX formats, whereas Proxmox VE uses QEMU and typically employs QCOW2 or raw formats.

In this video, I will go through migrating a Windows Hyper-v Virtual machine with the VHDX dynamic disk format to Proxmox qcow2 format.

Migrating VMs from Hyper-V to Proxmox VE allows you to take advantage of the features and benefits of Proxmox VE, such as its open-source nature, flexibility, and robustness. It's important to note that while this guide provides the basic steps for migration, the process might vary depending on the specific configurations of your virtual machines and host systems.
Command used in Windows terminal:
- qemu-img convert "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Virtual Hard Disks\ubuntu.vhdx" -O qcow2 "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Virtual Hard Disks\ubuntu.qcow2"

Default location of VMs in proxmox:
mkdir /var/lib/vz/images/VM_ID
Permissions:
chmod 740 /var/lib/vz/images/VM_ID

- qm rescan
This will scan the directories and add unattached disks to the VM configuration.
