Nepal earthquake kills over 150 in remote western region

An earthquake struck the Jajarkot region in western Nepal at 11:47 p.m. local time on Friday, with a 6.4 magnitude, according to Nepal's National Seismological Centre. Residents in the Himalayan nation’s central western town of Bheri inspected the damage caused to buildings on Saturday, following the country's worst earthquake in eight years that killed at least 157 people.

"First, we have to rescue all those injured people, who are treated at local hospitals and clinics. Seriously injured people will be sent to other hospitals by two military helicopters, and three other small military helicopters will also participate in the rescue. In the initial stage, we will treat the injured in different hospitals in the region," Nepalese Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Purna Bahadur Khadka said.

Officials said they fear the death toll could rise, as first responders had reached the hilly area near the epicentre, some 500 km west of the capital Kathmandu, early on Saturday and began searching for survivors. Khadka said Nepal has deployed its military forces to race against time to rescue all the injured.

At an airport in the Surkhet district of Karnali Province, about 150 km away from the epicentre, helicopters have been flying between the disaster area and the airport, transporting the injured for further treatment, and medical supplies have also arrived at the airport and are waiting to be sent to the quake-hit area.
