宮城県・気仙沼市の南部、本吉町前浜地区を襲った津波の様子を捉えた映像。
地元在住のカメラマン・畠山敬治氏による撮影。
地震発生から約30分過ぎた午後3時15分ごろ、前浜海岸を臨む本吉町天ケ沢の高台から、撮影者がカメラを回し始めた時、高波はすでに、前浜漁港内に達していた。
入江状になった港の沖合に東西両岸から突き出た2つの防波堤は、もう波にのまれそうになっている。
海面は、みるみるうちに防波堤の高さを超え、波にのまれた堤防付近で、激しい白波が沸き立ち、港内の水流が勢いを増す。
「危ない!」、「早く来い!」...撮影者の近辺に避難していた住民らが、まだ低地にいる人々に、必死に声を発して避難を促す。
「あの家が流れた!」という切迫した声に応じて、西側に走り、カメラを向けると、集落西側の高台は、中腹付近にまで水が達し、海岸に係留されていたはずの幾隻かの小舟が、浸水した家々の周辺を漂っていた。
海岸付近一帯を冠水させてなお、海面は高さを増してくる。
ほどなく、撮影者らのいる高台のすぐ真下の道路にまで波があふれ出してきた時、撮影者も身の危険を感じ、「逃げろ!」と叫びながら、あわててその場から避難した。
海岸付近から内陸方向へと向かった撮影者は、さらに周辺の被災状況をカメラに収めていく。
周辺の地形は、高台と低地が複雑に入り組んでおり、高い地点から、すぐ間近の低い地帯を蹂躙(じゅうりん)する津波の様子、あるいはその爪痕を次々と捉えていく。
やや低地にあるJR気仙沼線の線路(小金沢駅～大谷海岸駅間のほぼ中間付近)は、波の力で大きく破壊されていた。
午後4時すぎ、前浜から約500メートル北東にある日門海岸付近を臨めば、その付近の集落も壊滅状態となっていた。

Footage: A capture of the tsunami that attacked Motoyoshi town of Maehama area in the southern region of Kesennuma city, Miyagi prefecture. Footage was recorded by Mr. Keiji Hatakeyama, a local resident and cameraman. About 30 minutes from the time of earthquake occurrence, when Mr. Hatakeyama began to record with his camera from a hill in Amagasawa area of Motoyoshi town overlooking the coast of Maehama, around 3:15 p.m., the high waves had already reached Maehama Fishing Port. Offshore within the port which had now turned into an inlet, the two breakwalls sticking out from both east and west sides of the coast are about to be swallowed by waves.
In moments, the sea surface rises above the breakwalls, and violent white crested waves are seething near the now flooded embankment. Water currents continue to increase its intensity within the harbor.
"Watch out!" "Come here fast!" Those residents who had evacuated close by to where Mr. Hatakeyama was standing frantically call out to the people who are still on lower ground.
"That house has washed away!" To this imminent cry, the camera is faced towards the west. The hills on the western side of town had been submerged halfway up and small boats that had been moored ashore were now floating around the flooded houses.
Having inundated the entire region near the shore, the sea surface continues to rise. When the waves began to overflow into the road just below the hilltop where Mr. Hatakeyama was standing, he hurriedly evacuates, screaming "Run!"
He heads inland from the shore, capturing the situation of the disaster around him on camera.
The nearby topography consists of hills and lowlands that are mixed in a complicated way. The tsunami destroys neighboring lowlands from its high point, while the camera captures this and other damages caused.
The railroad tracks of JR Kesennuma line on low-lying grounds (midway between Koganezawa station and Ooyakaigan station) had been greatly wrecked by the forceful waves.
Looking out to the Hikadokaigan area approximately 500m northeast of Maehama(at around 4 p.m), one could see that the towns in vicinity were in a state of devastation.
