FRONT LEVER IN 5 MINUTES - THE ULTIMATE GUIDE
Before we start this tutorial, let me clarify one misconception that I often see flying around YouTube:
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A 'FRONT LEVER TUTORIAL FOR BEGINNERS'. THIS IS NOT A BEGINNER MOVE. If you're trying to train for full front lever just by doing tuck lever holds then sorry, I hate to break it to you, but you'll never get it that way. A FRONT LEVER ROUTINE FOR BEGINNERS IS THE BASIC PULL UPS, DIPS AND LEG RAISES WITH THE OCCASIONAL STATIC HOLD THROWN IN. I have never seen anyone hold a solid front lever without a very strong base in pull ups, so don't delude yourself and believe that you can bypass basics. Plus, if you don't even have the patience to work up to 15 good pull ups in one set then you don't deserve to do this move, END OF STORY.
With that out of the way, let me clarify the next point which is that you don't have to follow the progressions strictly. Most of the people who I've seen do the best front levers are those who just suddenly 'got the move' without any specific training. What does that tell you? THIS IS A PURE STRENGTH MOVE. There is virtually no technique to learn (unlike the muscle up or one-arm pull up) and there's not even balance involved (unlike the handstand push-up or planche). Of course specific training will make you more confident in the movement, but you should test and see which progressions work best for you. As an example I skipped tuck, one-leg and straddle for the following reasons:
TUCK: If you're doing it as a supplementary exercise to complement your bent-arm pulling, then OK. If you're using it to train for full front lever, then forget it ... there are far better exercises!
ONE-LEG: Asymmetric (which can lead to imbalances) and misleading - a lot easier than it looks.
STRADDLE: Difficult to maintain correct form, since it's easy to pike in the middle. Also looks ugly in my opinion ... but you can do it if you want.
