Pagan Themes in The Viking (1928) | UiO Student Conference 2023

How is paganism from the Viking Age depicted in films? How much has it changed over time? Is it still portrayed by men in horned helmets as in Wagner's operas, and how is it evolved from this to what we see in shows like Vikings and the Last Kingdom? In this talk, Jonathan Fischler takes a look at how paganism was depicted in one of the very first Viking films, simply named The Viking from 1928, the representation of Norse paganism as a mirror to Christianity, and whether any of the portrayals are based on the historical record.
