What Happened to New Zealand's New Flag?

In 2015 new Zealand went to the ballot box, not to choose a new political party, but to choose a new flag. Of over 10,000 designs sent in by members of the public, a shortlist of 40 was shortened to 4, then 5, designs of which 1 was put against the existing flag of Kiwiland in a duel of the flags to go down the ages. Why did New Zealand want to change their flag, and ultimately, why didn't they?
