31 Mr Dittl's Aviators Flight Log Vlog for the week of 04 23 26
************************************************************
* This Week’s Top Two are *
************************************************************
• Keep your eyes on the weather. As it is warming up, please ensure students dress for the weather and bring water bottles. As we know, Wisconsin weather changes fast, so try to look ahead to help students dress comfortably.
• On Wednesday, we had a visit from the Shorewood Intermediate School Band. We were treated to a long medley of Star Wars music, graduation themes, and ended with some White Stripes' 7 Nation Army!! It was a super fun assembly. Huge thanks again to our Shorewood Music Staff for such a cool experience.
Here are the Vlog Report points for our week:
• We have 100% of our permission slips for the Thursday, April 30th, Urban Ecology Field trip. We have three chaperones. I can’t wait to go!
• We are finishing Forward testing makeups (ELA and MATH) and some AimsWeb Reading fluency, spelling, and reading comprehension work this week. Thank you for your continued support with good bedtime routines, healthy breakfasts, and snacks to nurture and encourage our third-grade brains during assessments.
• English Language Module Block: We started Module 4 of our ELA curriculum: Water around the world. We read a narrative poetry book called Water Dance, all about the water cycle and the various forms water takes on planet Earth. Then, we read the first few pages of One Well: The Story of Water on Earth. Did you know that all the water on Earth is connected? It is! We are incorporating lessons on the parts of speech, such as verbs, nouns, adjectives, and adverbs, into the Module and ALL block work time, and you will finally get to see some ELA homework!!!!.
• In Math, students will compare and classify polygons (multi-sided shapes) based on their attributes. Some quadrilaterals (four-sided shapes) have specific names and attributes. Rectangles have parallel sides, for example. Students will sort and describe polygons by their attributes and consider how shapes can be formed by combining smaller shapes together.
• In Social Studies, we learned that First Peoples lived entirely off the resources provided by the land. The time before the arrival of Europeans and other non-indigenous people is known among many Native Americans as the Old Time. We have just begun discussing a few of the native groups living in Wisconsin near the end of the Old Time, such as the Ho-Chunk, Dakota, Menominee, and Ojibwe. We handled real artifacts from a Discovery box on loan to us from the Waukesha County Historical Society and Museum. Students got to investigate stone tools, bone tools, beaded moccasins, a deerskin purse, a stone marble game, a birchbark basket, tanned leather hides, and a raccoon and skunk pelt. It was exciting to handle real artifacts and share our notices and wonders. Tomorrow, we will read about the Anishinaabe people and how families had different jobs and responsibilities as part of a working community. During the four seasons, men, women, children, elders, and whole families had designated activities that provided food, shelter, clothing, and learning for everyone.
