How To Use Cord Ends

So, often, when we make our jewelry, it's strung on bead-stringing wire and finished with crimps. Either that, or we use chain. But there are lots of other materials that can be used to make jewelry. Silk cord, like these, is colorful and very popular now, to add some softness and texture to a piece of jewelry. Of course, leather has always been popular, strips of suede, whether narrow, or wider and thicker, and even in bright colors. Or even something like cotton cord, which is what this assortment is. These are just cotton cords. Waxed linen twine. There are lots of possibilities for stringing jewelry, not just bead-stringing wire and chain, but you may have wondered how to finish the ends, and that's what these are.

These are called cord ends, and you can see they come in different sizes and styles. The most common is this style. It has a U-shaped channel, and it also has a little tooth on the end, and that's so that you could put in a piece of suede or cord, and it would bite into it, and that would help hold it in place. I recommend when you use cord ends, that you also use a drop of a strong glue, such as Super Glue or E6000.

And here's an example of a piece of cord with cord ends on it. It just wraps around, and then there's a loop that you can attach a jump ring or a clasp to, and finish a piece of jewelry.

So the different sizes would be for different types of cord. Obviously, these smaller ones would be great for this finer cord, like the silk, or the cotton would go great in there. But if you were doing something more like the suede, you'd probably want a wider one.

So the way these work is, you put whatever your material is inside the channel, and then a pair of flat-nosed pliers is ideal, and you grab one side with your flat-nosed pliers and squash it flat. And then you can use the other side, and just a little bit of patience and perseverance, and squash that. And then, that is quite secure in there, even though I didn't add glue, although I normally would. And you could take a little bit more time than I did and do it more carefully.

These ones, with the coils, are done in a similar way. I have started flattening this one, with this round cord. You just start down here at the end and start flattening the coils with your pliers until it holds your cord in tightly. And then, you have the loops on the ends to add your findings and clasps, and you have some jewelry strung on something other than chain or wire.

Happy creating.
