Self-harming Behaviour: Management in Adolescence

Dr Norman Swan chairs this panel discussion where resources and support services are identified and made available to health professionals, educators, family and friends to assist in management of this issue.

Self-harming behaviours are not uncommon in adolescents and pose difficulties in establishing a diagnosis if the people around the person are not aware of the signs and clinical indicators.

As is the case in all aspects of healthcare, early diagnosis is the key. Self-harming behaviour may be the result of many underlying issues that can be missed if treatment doesn't include a more investigative approach. Considering why particular incidents occur is a key component in the identification of the underlying cause/s. Seeking that level of diagnosis will potentially enable better management, improved outcomes and the prevention of ongoing emotional and behavioural difficulties.
