Early Intervention in Psychosis - Dr. Paddy Power

Dr. Power's lecture addresses the 2 questions:

What are the benefits of early intervention in schizophrenia*?
Are we any closer to preventing schizophrenia?

*the diagnosis of schizophrenia is defined here as ' where a person is experiencing continual symptoms of psychosis for at least one month '

Dr. Power categorizes four stages of development which illustrate the progression of the illness, schizophrenia:

Stage 1. Subtle Symptoms
Stage 2. Psychotic
Stage 3. Relapse
Stage 4. Treatment Resistance

He references studies (Alison Yung 1999, Patrick McGorry 2002 and Mary Cannon 2013) which show that early intervention at Stage 1 can result in more benign treatments for patients and in the long term reduce costs of health service delivery by reducing submissions to hospital and relapse admissions. Dr. Power also talks about the Australian service model of early intervention, Headspace and the potential for the Irish organization Headstrong's Jigsaw project to map to this model of service delivery.
