King Tancred and the end of Norman rule in Sicily
Tancred was made king not because he was the most able, nor because he had a particulairly good claim on the throne, but rather as to make sure that someone else didn't inherit the kingdom. The rightfull heir was Constance, future Holy Roman Empress, and the Sicilians knew that rule by her ment rule by the Germans, and an end to independence. These circumstances would make sure that Tancred could never sit safely on the throne, and would make his reign a tumultuous one ...
