Teen Girls, Boy Bands and Objectification, a video essay (EXO and the Jonas Brothers)
In this video I discuss why boy bands such as One Direction, The Jonas Brothers, EXO and BTS are so popular and how boy bands and male idols are sexualized and objectified, as well as the moralization of boy band lyrics and boy bands in general due to sexism against their fan base of predominantly teen girls and young women.
I specifically talk about EXO, a K-pop boy band, and how their marketing and growth differed from that of Disney’s boy band The Jonas Brothers, and talk about why K-pop boy bands like BTS and male K-pop idols in general have longer shelf lives than their counterparts in the U.S.
Lastly, I touch on girl groups and the obstacles they face in the music industry.
