ANTI-BLACKNESS IN THE ASIAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY | Cheyenne Lin
Anti-Black racism in the Asian American community goes so much deeper than appropriation. Asian Americans are so invested in being the "good" minority" and mainting their proximity to whitness we have used our light skinned model minority privilege to murder Black people.
George Floyd and Latasha Harlins should be alive today, but they aren’t because of our individual actions and our collective inaction.
We also can’t just blame the white for people pitting us against each other because the fact of the matter is, is that Asian cultures have a huge colorism problem and a huge problem with Black people!
And that idea that we can’t just blame white people, but that we have to blame ourselves is hard and uncomfortable, but it should be.
It should make you feel guilty and wrong, and yeah, those are tough feelings to process. But you know what’s tougher? Being hunted down and murdered for existing.
Asian Americans must stand in solidarity with Black people because we cannot continue to stand idly by and let fellow people of color get murdered.
Our whiteness is conditional, and not something to be proud of or clung to. Our fight against the white capitalist patriarchy is the same and we need to understand that.
So that’s it. Thanks again for watching and let me know what you think of anti-Blackness in the Asian American community in the comments down below.
