Cogne Ice Climbing - Epinel: Lacrime Per Carla
LACRIME PER CARLA
LOCATION: Cogne – Epinel
ORIENTATION: North-East
ALTITUDE: 1500 m
ACCESS TIME: 30′-40'
LENGHT: 120 m
GRADING: II/3
Start: Regional road n. 47 - Epinel village - Pizza Restaurant La Refia. Park your car in this big car park and cross the bridge to the left. Several paths start here (see the signpost). Go right and follow the sign to Petit Nomenon, till you get to the torrent that goes down the big gorge where you will see the icefall. Cross it and hike up to the right-side of the stream (facing upstream) till you get to the base of the two icefalls.
Description (ice condition dependant):
It’s a three pitches climb. P1: short 70°-80°-wall built-in the rocks that gets to the giants’ pots. Followed by a short vertical 90°-section. P2: a cauliflower ramp followed by a 70°-80°-wall and a small 90°-candle. From this point on, the stream becomes flat till it gets to an amphitheatre. There are two different options: P3a: to the right on a 60°-70°-cauliflower section with an easy pitch and the exit the icefall. P3b: to the left – if the ice allows to – with a 80°-85°-section on an iced slipway on rocks that are very polished. If you exit to the left, you can go on climbing on other prominences (with trees stuck in between) and transfer sections. You then get to a bridge that is the end of the icefall.
Descent:
- either rappel back to the bottom of the climb and retrace your steps to the car park ( not the most pleasant)
-or at the top, look left for a sign post. Take path 27 to Epinel - 20' - 30'. Much faster and easier than the abseils.
