3 Chris Poland Licks
Here's the next Three-For-All lesson with a look at three tasty licks coming from the legendary Chris Poland. Most folks know Chris from his early days of playing with Megadeth, especially his appearance playing on their breakthrough 'Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?' album from 1986.
Since that time, Chris has appeared on a number of compilation albums and has made several guest appearances, which include albums by Lamb of God, Queensryche, Jeff Loomis, and many others.
This lesson features three licks taken from a candid video I found on Youtube, and while the video itself was rather short, there was plenty of time for Chris to whip out some interesting licks and unusual phrases.
This includes a couple of legato-based speed licks and a wicked "psycho blues" lick, not to mention a brief look at Chris' expressive "precision bending" technique - where he typically bends a note and releases the bend a half-step, before returning to the original (non-bent) starting note.
These precision bending licks/phrases are so musical and expressive that they sound like an odd hybrid between keyboardist Jan Hammer and slide guitar guru Derek Trucks, which come complete with Poland's signature style and melodic flair.
