Car starts then dies

Here are the top reasons why a car starts then dies.

Number one: Fuel pump. A failing fuel pump will sometime start then dies when stepping on the gas pedal. Use a fuel pressure gauge and confirm fuel pressure. If you do not have a fuel pressure gauge, remove the intake inlet tube and spray starting fluid in the throttle body. If the vehicle stays running with starting fluid, the fuel pump is faulty.

Number two: Misfire. A severe misfire will prevent a vehicle from running properly. This may be due to a faulty ignition coil, faulty fuel injectors, low engine compression, oil on the spark plug due to bad valve cover gasket or tube seals, open or damaged wires, worn spark plugs, bad spark plug cables, vacuum leaks.

Number three: Faulty or failing mass air flow sensor. start by unplugging the air flow sensor. If the vehicle starts right up, the air flow is faulty. Sometime an airflow can be saved by cleaning it. Use an appropriate air flow cleaner and clean the air flow sensor. In addition, inspect the inlet tube for possible cracks that will allow unmetered air to engine the throttle body.

Number four: Vacuum leak. A severe vacuum leak will prevent an engine from idling. A vacuum leak could be caused by a cracked vacuum hose, worn intake manifold gasket, worn brake booster.

Number five: Main relay. a failing relay could cause a vehicle from starting or start then dies. the main relay operates the fuel pump and provides power to the injectors.

Number six: Crankshaft sensor. a crankshaft sensor controls fuel injection and ignition timing. replace the crankshaft sensor.

Number seven: Faulty throttle position sensor. a faulty throttle position sensor can cause an engine to suddenly stall.

Number eight: Idle air control. a faulty idle air control will not allow a vehicle to idle properly.
the vehicle may start but then suddenly dies. replace the idle air control.

Number nine: Timing is off. this can be due to a jumped timing belt, timing chain, or improperly installed timing belt. remove the timing cover and inspect the timing.

Number ten: Check engine light. scan the vehicle for any possible codes that can also cause a vehicle to not idle.
