Number one. Idle air control. The idle air control is responsible for maintaining idle. When an idle is faulty it allows more air to bypass the throttle plate at idle therefore acting like a vacuum leak. Usually when the vehicle is in motion; a bad idle air control does not affect drivability. However it will affects drivability when coming to a stop sign. Replacing the idle air control will fix this problem.

Number two. Misfire. A misfire usually triggers a check engine light. If the misfire is severe the check engine light will start to flash allowing the driver to know there is a fault. Usually a misfire will trigger a code of p0300, p0301, p0302, p0303 and so on. Some of the common causes of a misfire are faulty ignition coil, bad spark plug and wires, bad fuel injectors, low engine compression, burnt valves, vacuum leak, open wires, shorted wires, bad distributor cap, and blown head gasket.

Number three. Vacuum leak. A vacuum can disrupt air and fuel mixture. A mass air flow is responsible for measuring the incoming air. When a vacuum leak is present; the mass air flow sensor is unable to read unmetered air entering the engine therefore sending false information to the computer. A vacuum leak will cause a lean condition and a high positive short term fuel trim and long term fuel trim.

Number four. Timing is off. When the timing is off; the engine will perform poorly. Some of the common causes are jumped timing due to weak timing tensioner, bad timing belt, timing chain, worn timing guide and so on.

Number five. Engine mechanical problems. Some of the common causes of engine mechanical problems are burnt valves, worn piston rings, worn cylinder wall, worn rod bearings and main bearings.
