Topic: Why does my car start and then shut off

This video is for vehicle that starts up all the time and then shut off after a few seconds.

Number one. First start the vehicle and step on the gas pedal. If the vehicle stays running with the foot on the gas, most likely you have an idle air control issue. Use a scan tool for idle air control codes. If there are no codes; use a throttle body cleaner and clean the throttle body. This may help clear the blockage build up in the throttle body. Clean the passage in the throttle body. Start the vehicle; the vehicle may improve at this point. Sometime, a failing idle air control can make a flaring noise at start up.

Number two. You might have a vacuum leak. Start the vehicle and listen for a hissing noise. If there is a hissing noise, then you have a vacuum leak. Inspect, all vacuum hoses going to the intake manifold. Make sure there are no cracks. In addition, the intake manifold gasket can also wear out. Use carburetor cleaner and spray around suspected vacuum leak area. If the idle increases, then you found your vacuum leak. Be mindful as this can catch the engine on fire. Have a fire extinguish next to you just in case.

Number three. Scan the vehicle for possible misfire. A misfire will not allow the engine to performance properly due to lack of spark, fuel or low compression.

Number four. a failing fuel pump. A failing fuel pump may provide the minimum fuel pressure at start up but may not able to keep the vehicle due to a weak failing fuel pump electric motor.
