A Chinese man has met his father again 24 years after being kidnapped from a vegetable market near his home.

“Dad I am back,” cried Sun Bin, now 28, as he was led into a police station on Tuesday. His father, Sun Youhong, kneeling on the ground to apologise to him, gripped his son’s arms tightly. “You are a man,” he said. “Do not cry”.

“I had no idea what he would look like,” he said. The only clue he had for years was a grainy photograph taken in 1991, three days before his son went missing. Sun Bin’s parents lost him when they went shopping on an Autumn day in their native city of Chengdu, leaving him to play with some other children while they picked up their daily groceries.

His mother left the market first, but Sun Bin told her he wanted to keep playing. By the time his father tried to find him to take him home for lunch, a strange man had been spotted leading him away.

His parents, distraught, immediately called the police rushed to the train station but it was too late. The traffickers had already bundled him onto a train and would take him to Xuzhou, some 1,000 miles away. For the next two decades he was raised by a couple who, desperate for a son, had bought him for 2,000 yuan (£200). Child trafficking is a huge business in China, where some couples will go to any lengths to obtain a male heir.

There are no accurate statistics, but experts believe between 20,000 and 40,000 children are stolen each year, compared to the 50 or so children abducted in the UK by strangers last year.

Only a handful of families ever find their children again. Sun Bin’s parents stopped working and dedicated themselves to searching for him for four years before losing hope. But they always told their daughter, who was born three years after Sun Bin went missing, that she had an older brother.
