Afghanistan reports rising toll from natural disasters with widespread damage

Authorities in Afghanistan say at least 214 people have died in natural disasters since the start of the current solar year, including 14 deaths recorded in the past 24 hours.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority, around 300 people have been injured in incidents such as floods and landslides, while 11 others remain missing.

Officials reported extensive damage to infrastructure and housing, with 1,481 homes completely destroyed and more than 5,900 partially damaged across the country.

Heavy rainfall has triggered widespread flooding, causing significant harm to agricultural land, roads, irrigation systems, and communication networks—worsening conditions for many communities, particularly in rural areas.

The disasters follow years of drought in Afghanistan. While recent rains have helped ease water shortages, they have also led to substantial human and economic losses, affecting thousands of families already facing difficult living conditions.

Authorities and humanitarian organizations have called for increased relief efforts, urgent assistance for affected populations, and stronger preventive measures to mitigate the impact of recurring natural disasters.
