Stilt fishing is a unique practice of fishing where the fishermen sit inside the sea on a pole and use fishing rods to catch fish. Today this style of fishing is common only in Sri Lanka. So, in this video, we are featuring those stilt fishermen, their fishing style, their village, and a few of their recipes.

It was our 5th day in Sri Lanka and we travelled from Nuwara Eliya to Elle and then to Galle. On our way we passed through several farm fields, tea plantations, temples including Sita Devi Temple with its significance in Ramayana, Fort of Ravana, and Ravana Falls.
Our journey until Galle was through the inner regions of the island, but Galle is a coastal area. Our aim was to experience whale watching in Galle, and of course, to see and learn about stilt fishing and their lifestyle.
Very close to Galle town is a fishing village of stilt fishermen - Koggale. After searching over the internet and contacting many people in Sri Lanka, through the support of Mudithe I found Mahesh, who's father is a stilt fisherman. Mahesh shared with us a location where his father and his friends go for stilt fishing in the Indian Ocean. He did also promised us to give a chance to experience fishermen village cooking. And that's the flashback and the rest you can watch in this video - stilt fishing in detail, experiencing Kola Kenda (Herbal Porridge or Kanji), cooking of idiyappam and coconut sambal (chammanthi), preparation of lunch with leafy vegetables, pumpkin, and sardines, and more.
