As leg muscles are largest and strongest muscles in body if they are being worked at higher intensities as lower intensities will not work effectively on them as they are already carrying your entire body weight at all times stimulate growth.
when they are worked at higher intensities they make hormonal system to release more growth stimulus which is not localized for leg muscles only but also work on entire musculature (hypertrophy)of body enhancing all the muscles eventually.
while doing most of the leg exercises core stability is the most important factor to take in consideration. as they require stable and strong midsection (rectus abdominus) and if you consider only abs will do the work you are mistaken core consists of abdominal muscles, obliques,lower back muscles and hip flexors.

without performing single ab exercise and only by performing squats,dead lifts,leg extensions ,calf rises and sprint i.e by only doing leg exercises one can have chiseled core as squats and dead lift provide strength and definition to abs and sprinting makes them ripped by removing layer of fat on them.
